What PopGuard does

PopGuard is a browser extension that blocks pop-ups, popunders, click-jacking overlays and advertisements. It decides whether to close a newly opened tab by checking whether a genuine click from you accounts for it.

Data collected

None. PopGuard does not collect any of the following:

• Personally identifiable information, such as your name, address or email
• Health, financial or authentication information
• Personal communications, form contents or passwords
• Location data
• Browsing history
• Website content
• Usage analytics, telemetry or crash reports

What is processed on your device

To do its job, PopGuard examines certain information on the pages you visit. This happens entirely within your browser, in memory, and is never recorded or sent anywhere:

• The address of the page you are on, to check it against your trusted-site list
• The destination of a link you clicked, to check whether it explains a tab that just opened
• Whether the browser reported a click as a genuine user action rather than one simulated by the page
• The size, position and styling of page elements, to identify overlays and floating advertisements

What is stored on your device

PopGuard uses your browser's local extension storage. This data stays in your browser, is never transmitted, and is deleted when you uninstall the extension:

• Your settings, such as which protection layers and filter lists are enabled
• Your list of trusted sites
• A short list of recently blocked pop-ups, kept only so you can reopen one that was blocked by mistake. It holds at most 25 entries and each is replaced as new ones arrive. You can clear it at any time from the extension's panel.

Network activity

PopGuard makes no outbound network requests of any kind. Its advertisement filter lists are compiled into the extension when it is built and are updated only when you install a new version from the Chrome Web Store. The extension does not download, fetch or execute any code or data from the internet while it runs.

Data sharing

PopGuard does not sell, share or transfer any data to anyone, for any purpose. There is no data to sell, share or transfer, and no server to send it to.

Permissions

PopGuard requests access to every http and https site. Unwanted pop-ups are not confined to a known list of sites, so the extension has to be able to act on whatever page you are on. No other scheme is requested. This access is used only to block pop-ups and advertisements, as described above. You can add any site to your trusted list, and on those sites PopGuard is not loaded at all.

Children

PopGuard is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this address with a new date at the top.
